Connecting with Readers Through Instagram Broadcast Channels

by Jacky Bethea|February, 2026

Broadcast channels are a feature unique to Instagram that can offer authors opportunities to quickly and easily connect with their most dedicated readers. Here’s how authors can leverage this feature to enhance their presence and engagement on the platform.

What Are Broadcast Channels?

Instagram describes broadcast channels as “a quick, casual way to connect directly with your followers.” They allow users to send messages to a group of followers who opt in to receive them via IG direct messages. Broadcast channels are a great way to share different kinds of content as well as important updates, announcements, and exclusive content with your biggest fans, since subscribers are typically your most devoted readers and followers.

For an author, an IG broadcast channel can function similarly to a newsletter. The major difference is that these channels are primarily for short-form content. You can send brief messages, voice notes, reels, and interactive features like polls, questions, and prompts. You can also allow direct replies from channel members and interact with them, adding to the more personal feel of this tool.

What Are the Opportunities for Authors with Broadcast Channels?

Share Exclusive Content

Provide sneak peeks of upcoming books, behind-the-scenes looks at the writing process, and/or personal insights. Reward your loyal followers with special offers and promotions, share links to purchase books directly, and highlight positive reviews.

Engage with Followers

Use the engagement features and host Q&A sessions, polls, and interactive discussions to get your community involved in your content. This is also a great place to announce book launches, signings, and other events to keep followers informed and excited.

Growth Opportunities

If you make IG reels, you can share those easily on your broadcast channel and encourage your audience to show a video some love by liking, sharing, or tagging a friend in the comments. This can help give the video an initial boost in IG’s algorithm. You can also share links to content you make elsewhere—like your latest newsletter, article, or interview—or collaborate with other authors to share one another’s content in your respective broadcast channels.

How Do I Make One?

With an Instagram creator account, you can start a channel in your inbox. Your followers will receive an invitation to join, either after you’ve created the channel or after they follow your account. You can also encourage people to join by adding a “Join Channel” sticker on your Instagram stories and putting a link in your bio.

Instagram also allows users to create more than one broadcast channel, so you could establish separate distros for different purposes or topics. For example, if you are both an author and a thought leader in a specific niche, you can create separate channels for book-related updates and whatever topic is your specialty.

If you are curious about trying broadcast channels but still on the fence, try joining one to get inspiration! And if you’re interested in starting your own but aren’t sure what to share, your publishing team can assist you.
